Ventilation System Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic

In hospital facilities, Hood Cleaning Rapid City plays an important role during the COVID-19 pandemic by reducing the spread of airborne contaminants through dilution, filtration, and pressurization. But to function properly, these systems must be properly designed and maintained.

Mechanical ventilation systems replace contaminated indoor air, minimize mixing of dirty and clean air, regulate ambient temperature and humidity, and maintain a consistent relationship between space pressurizations. Ventilation systems also help to control cross-contamination in hospital rooms by preventing the escape of airborne contaminants.

Ventilation System Care Tips for Businesses

To ensure that ventilation systems are functioning as intended, facility engineers and mechanical contractors must regularly inspect and clean ventilation ducts. This includes checking for blockages and cleaning, maintaining or replacing filters, repairing duct leaks, and testing energy recovery ventilator (ERV) systems for proper operation.

During the pandemic, most hospitals modified their ventilation systems to increase outdoor air intake and reduce recirculation of contaminated air in their air-handling units (AHUs). This increased ventilation was done to minimize the recirculation of contaminated air, which was found to be a significant contributing factor in spreading COVID-19 in hospitals.

Many patients may require some type of ventilator to support their breathing, especially if they are suffering from conditions like ARDS or lung injury that cause the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs to collapse when you breathe out. Ventilation can be invasive, in which case the provider puts a tube down your throat (intubation) to help you breathe, or noninvasive, in which case a mask is connected to your ventilator. In both cases, the provider will usually set your ventilator to use PEEP, which helps oxygen get into collapsed alveoli and into the bloodstream.
